Floor lamp ENGIADINA

A story from the mountains

Take light and shade, add perfect details and sophisticated functionality, combine these with top materials from the sustainable material wood in spruce, larch or Swiss stone pine and you get a floor lamp in a league of its own. Inspired, created and manufactured in the Swiss mountains.

Inspiration from the Grisons mountains

Urs Herger, industrial designer, lives and works in the picturesque village of Bergün in the Swiss canton of Grisons with its beautiful Engadine-style houses from the 16th to 18th centuries with façade paintings, bay windows and sgraffito. It was the sgraffito painting , in which archaic geometric patterns are scratched into the still wet plaster of freshly built facades, that inspired the designer to adopt a similar pattern for his ENGIADINA floor lamp. As pioneers in 5-axis CNC technology , vonrickenbach.swiss ag was entrusted with the production of the sophisticated lamp body.

REGIONAL AND SUSTAINABLE

But it was not only the Engadine architectural style that influenced Urs Herger in his design of the ENGIADINA. In his hometown of Bergün, wood, especially conifers such as Swiss stone pine, larch, spruce, and spruce, is an important cultural and economic factor. For one thing as a traditional material, and at the same time as a sustainable and future-oriented material. Wood can be found in abundance and in the finest quality in the Swiss (mountain) forests. It has always been cultivated and processed in local businesses. For the designer, it was therefore a matter of honour that only the very best mountain wood should be used for his designer lamp.

Swiss solid wood

The floor lamp ENGIADINA is made in three solid wood species: larch, pine, and Swiss stone pine. As already mentioned above, the elaborate sgraffito paintings served as inspiration. In the ENGIADINA, Herger has implemented these 2-dimensional, sculptural patterns in a relief that defines the large side faces of the luminaire and creates an interesting interplay of light and shadow.

The dominant part of the lamp is a solid wood body made from a single piece of wood. Inside the lamp is an LED-equipped reflector that extends over the entire height of the luminaire and is covered flush with an acrylic diffuser. A single long but delicate touch lever allows the luminaire to be switched on and off as well as to be infinitely dimmed.

Precision for the highest demands

As pioneers of 5-axis CNC technology, vonrickenbach.swiss ag was recommended to Urs Herger by a designer friend of his. When producing the demanding wood geometry of the ENGIADINA designer lamp, the highest precision was required in the CNC milling process so that the machining quality met the highest standards, and the manufacture effort could be kept as low as possible.

The flat pyramid-shaped recesses had to result in a flawless surface in just one pass to avoid time-consuming manual finishing work. Depending on the type of wood, there is always the risk of the fibres being torn out or the wood being overheated. Choosing the right machining parameters was therefore of great importance to ensure that each piece turned out perfectly.
