Simple, straightforward, and yet unique in design and seating comfort. A classically timeless wooden chair designed by Heinz Baumann, furniture designer and manufacturer from the Rhine Valley in St. Gallen.
For over 40 years, Heinz Baumann has been designing and producing furniture made of solid wood with great passion and a feel for design. When he was still a young man, he noticed that over time there were often cracks in the seating surface of solid wood chairs. Baumann believed that these weaknesses were the result of the then common method of connecting the chair legs and the transverse plank construction of the seat surfaces. For him, this fact was the motivation to design a perfect solid wood chair without visible frames and with the wood direction of the seat running in the direction of the seat instead of horizontally, which was often the case with conventional wooden chairs. The resulting chair, SEDIA, was designed to appear as if it had been made from a single piece of wood, as beautiful as a sculpture and both comfortable and robust. Baumann is proud that this beautiful and very functional chair does not only appeal to people with an affinity for design, but also to people of all ages and incomes who value comfort and durability in furniture.

Simplicity and elegance in solid wood
SEDIA is manufactured in our factory in Muothathal with state-of-the-art production technology and old-fashioned craftsmanship. The chair is made entirely of high-quality solid wood. Nevertheless, Heinz Baumann has managed to design the chair in a light and filigree way.
With SEDIA, the back legs and the backrest are steam-bent. This circumstance not only has a positive effect on the design, but also on the stability. Thanks to this technique, the grain of the wood is not disturbed, which counteracts stresses that can lead to cracks over time. They also run parallel to the outer contours, which helps to create a flowing, uniform look. These parts are bent by our partner, the Winkler wood bending factory in Felsenau, which we always consult for special bentwood parts of this kind.
Superior craftsmanship and CNC
The chair is of the highest quality in terms of craftsmanship. Series production of the chair is demanding due to some details. But thanks to our 5-axis technology and many years of know-how, it is possible to produce the chair at least in part industrially. Especially the precise connections between the seat and the front and back legs are a challenge.
In my eyes, SEDIA is a perfect combination of craftsmanship and technology. The precise processing, not without danger in manual production, can be carried out easily by the CNC, while cutting, gluing and the finishing still requires time-consuming manual work, a certain amount of know-how and a lot of sensitivity. The solid wood chair is available in European walnut, American walnut, cherry, oak, or ash, oiled or matt lacquered (other surfaces on request) and is distributed by SOLID. All products from SOLID are 100 percent designed, developed, and produced in Switzerland.
