Noble wooden box for collector's item.

Victorinox auctions a one-of-a-kind collector's item

A one-of-a-kind collector’s item: The first 30 knives from the “Swiss Champ Damast” limited edition of 6,000 pieces were assembled by hand by Victorinox CEO Carl Elsener. One of these sought-after Swiss Army Knives, Number 30, will be auctioned on “eBay for Charity” starting from August 27, 2021. The proceeds of the auction will be donated to the charity organization “Ein Herz für Kinder.” Our company, vonrickenbach.swiss, was given the privilege of producing an exclusive presentation box for the first 30 exemplars.

The traditional family-owned company Victorinox AG, like vonrickenbach.swiss ag, attaches great importance to social responsibility, welfare in general and that of children in particular. That is the reason why Victorinox, in cooperation with “eBay for Charity”, supports the internationally active aid organization “Ein Herz für Kinder”, whose focus is on supporting children and families in need. As head of the family business, Carl Elsener also has a personal interest in this promotional event and is giving it his wholehearted support.

SWISS CHAMP DAMAST LIMITED EDITION 2021

In terms of looks and expectations, it takes exclusive to a new level: damast steel blades and scales made from black forged carbon give this latest Victorinox pocket knife a truly innovative character. As a limited edition with only 6,000 sequentially numbered pieces available worldwide, the new Swiss Champs model has already achieved legendary status. In addition to the color and design, this knife is equipped with unique, exceptional characteristics: “Björkman’s Twist” is the name of this damast steel, forged with more than 100 layers to give it its unmistakable pattern, together with extreme durability. This is the high-quality steel Champions are made of, and the reason why Victorinox chose this material. And a closer look inside the Swiss Champ Damast will reveal a grand total of 29 functions.

Our passion: solid wood

The exclusive collector’s item is presented in a unique wooden box, which we were allowed to produce in a combination of modern technology and handicraft.. Victorinox commissioned us to produce a noble and high-quality packaging made of solid wood for the first 30 multitools, which Mr. Elsener, CEO Victorinox AG, personally assembled and signed. During a personal meeting, we were able to advise Mr Elsener on topics such as function, construction, proportions, design, type of wood and surface treatment.

For the wood, the first choice was cherry wood – a robust hardwood from the region, with a noble and warm tone and also well-workable. It was imperative that the box fit the knife perfectly and that the knife could not slip inside the box and be damaged. In addition, a small piece of felt protects the carbon shell from possible scratches.

Precision and technology

For this order, precision work was required with one of our 5 axis CNC machines. The knife body as well as the blades were precisely milled. The closing mechanism consists of small, drilled-in bar magnets that hold the base and the lid of the box together so that it can be opened easily. Victorinox’s demands on aesthetics and design led us to seek expert support for the final design from an industrial designer friend, Pirmin Giger of Peppertree Visions.

The surface of the box has been sanded and treated with a high-quality wood oil, which adds a noble touch to the cherry wood. On the inside of the lid there is the laser engraved Victorinox company logo and on the outside an inlay made of chrome-nickel steel (CNS) in the shape of the Victorinox Cross & Shield. The cut-out for this was laser-etched into the cherry wood with hundredths of a millimetre precision.

vonrickenbach.swiss ag is proud of its longstanding partnership with Victorinox and we are delighted to have been commissioned to produce these unique wooden presentation boxes for the esteemed collectors’ items.
