AKI-Stool

A stool for the chapel

Super-B, designer from Zurich, designs this and that, one of which is a beautiful stool made of high-quality maple for the recently renovated chapel of the aki Catholic Student Chaplaincy in Zurich. vonrickenbach.swiss ag was commissioned to produce the AKI stool and we are thrilled with the result.

A stool for the chapel.

Benjamin Jan Fischer aka Super-B, born in 1984 in Zurich, studied industrial design at ECAL in Lausanne, followed by internships with Christophe Marchand and Big Game, among others. Since becoming self-employed, he has been designing this and that under the pseudonym Super-B (with a showroom at Hirschengraben): a series of stools, a chair, a table, exceptional mirrors, a mobile or a clock. In the field of tension between design and art.

This was also the case with his recently realised commissioned work. Super-B was commissioned by the aki Catholic Student Chaplaincy in Zurich to develop a stool for the chapel, which was undergoing renovation. The stool was to complement the existing inventory and be stackable. We were allowed to produce the stool designed by Fischer. The conversion of the chapel is now complete and the beautiful AKI stools are in use.

Beautifully sculpted from noble and robust maple wood

To produce the stylish AKI stools, high-quality maple wood was used. Maple is one of the most valuable precious hardwoods. Its yellowish-white, hard, and tough wood is used primarily in furniture production and interior Design. In professional circles, evenly grown maple wood is also known as tonewood or resonance wood and is highly sought after for musical instrument makers because of its easy workability and bendability. In addition, the wood simply looks beautiful.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE THANKS TO MODERN TECHNOLOGY

Our modern CAD/CAM technology accompanied the AKI stool project from the design idea at the first customer contact, through construction and planning, to production. Preparing the data for our 5-axis CNC machine, which was also used to produce the AKI stools, requires many years of experience and a great deal of technical know-how. For this reason, our employees are constantly undergoing further training to ensure that they are always up to date with the latest developments.

KNOW-HOW AND PERFECTION

Many production difficulties can be prevented by meticulous planning and programming. However, every new order brings challenges that we can usually solve thanks to our many years of experience in processing solid wood. Also, in the case of the AKI stools, some details had to be considered. Starting with the small cross-sections, which made clamping and gluing difficult.

In addition, the wood had to be flawless to ensure stability of the stools. Five different individual parts were produced for the AKI stool. Interesting technical details worth mentioning are the overleafing with negative angles where the angle was smaller than 90 degrees, the joining of small cross-sections and the grain direction of the seat, which was milled out of the board with a 4-degree bevel.

Natural finishing and colours

In the initial production of 24 stools, half of them were not given a surface treatment to preserve the beautiful natural wood look of the maple. The other twelve stools were lacquered in three different colours as requested – the closed surface of the maple provides an ideal basis for opaque lacquered surfaces. The designer Benjamin Fischer personally sorted on site which stools should be opaquely lacquered and which should remain raw.
